Professor Shaun Jackson (MBBS, B. Med. Sci. Ph.D.) is a Prof. Medicine, Monash University and Adjunct Professor at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, San Diego (CA, USA). Prof. Jackson’s broad research interest is in the area of atherothrombosis, with specific focus on the prothrombotic and proinflammatory function of blood platelets. Prof. Jackson and his colleagues discovered the key role for PI 3-kinase in promoting thrombosis and developed the first class of PI 3-kinase inhibitors for use in humans. His group has also had international acclaim for defining the mechanisms by which disturbances in blood flow promote the formation of pathological blood clots. Prof. Jackson has received numerous awards in recognition of his research, including the inaugural Premier's Award for Medical Research (1995); the AMGEN Award from the Australian Society for Medical Research (2005); and the Marion Barnhart Prize (2009) from the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. In 2010, Prof. Jackson was awarded a prestigious Australia Fellowship from the NHMRC.
