"Immunity, like life, is all about regulation"
Our interest is immune mechanisms of disease and immunotherapeutics, in particular the pathogenesis and prevention of diabetes. Diabetes is a major global public and personal health problem. In developed countries, diabetes directly accounts for 10% of health expenditure. We have developed approaches to the pre-clinical diagnosis and prediction of type 1 diabetes and, based on animal model studies, have taken autoantigen-specific vaccination into clinical trials for the prevention of human type 1 diabetes. We now have a major interest in antigen-specific regulatory T cells and in the role of innate immune inflammation in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and other features of type 2 diabetes.
