Professor in Experimental Endocrinology and Medical Education
at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands
"Anti-mullerian hormone: both regulator and marker of ovarian
function"

Axel P.N. Themmen Ph.D. (1955) is Professor in Experimental Endocrinology and Medical Education at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He received his undergraduate training at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, The Netherlands (1982). His Ph.D. studies were on the role of LH signal transduction in the regulation of steroidogenesis in testicular Leydig cells (1986). After a post-doctoral training with Dr. Lutz Birnbaumer at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was involved in the cloning of the vasopressin receptor, he returned to the Netherlands on a 5-year fellowship of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (1989). Since 2000, he supervises a research team in the laboratory of endocrinology of the Department of Internal Medicine at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. From 2007 to 2011 he has served as the course director of the first three years of the medical school at Erasmus MC.

His main research interests are: the regulation of brown and white adipose tissue by peptide and steroid hormones, the mechanism of action of ghrelin and unacylated ghrelin and the role of AMH in ovarian regulation. He is a member of the European and American Endocrine Societies.
