Professor Marilyn Renfree
Laureate Professor, Ian Potter Chair of Zoology, Department of Zoology, The University of Melbourne
"Marsupials are placental mammals - and lactation specialists"

Marilyn’s research has focussed almost entirely on marsupials because of their intrinsic interest and for the opportunities they provide as biomedical models for understanding mammalian reproduction and development. Her laboratory is known internationally for its study of these unique Australian mammals. Marilyn graduated from ANU, and has held NHMRC, Fulbright, Ford Foundation and Royal Society fellowships at Monash, Murdoch and Edinburgh Universities. She was appointed to the Ian Potter Chair of Zoology at the University of Melbourne in 1991 and was Head of Department until 2003. Marilyn has received many awards throughout her career. She was an ARC Federation Fellow between 2003-8 and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Kangaroo Genomics from 2008-2010. She is co-Vice President and Secretary, Biological Sciences of the Australian Academy of Science and a Laureate Professor of the University of Melbourne.
