"Human uterine stem/progenitor cells: implications for uterine physiology and pathology"
Dr. Maruyama received an M.D. and Ph.D. in 1986 and in 1996, respectively, from School of Medicine, Keio University. He joined the Institute for Virus Research, Kyoto University, in 1994 and moved to the National Institutes of Health, USA, as a post-doctoral fellow in 1996. After returning to Japan, he has served as an assistant professor and a principal investigator at the current department from 2002 to present.
The human uterus consisting of the endometrium and the outer smooth muscle layer, termed the myometrium, exhibits repeated and dramatic tissue regeneration and remodeling throughout reproductive life. His research group has developed in vivo regeneration model of human endometrium and its bioluminescence imaging system and also has identified human endometrial and myometrial stem/progenitor-like cells. In this seminar he will present his work on the human uterine stem cell biology.
