Mass Spectrometry
The Mass Spectrometry Facility houses cutting-edge mass spectrometry and proteomics technologies for the study of protein structure and function, and their relationship to human disease.  The facility can provide:
  • Based upon a collaborative model:
    • Consultation to researchers interested in or engaged in biomarker identification, including basic protein identification, fractionation and analysis
    • Proteomic analyses for discovery studies, using in-gel and gel-free technologies
    • Design and development of Mass spectrometry-based research diagnostics and/or ELISA assays
  • Based upon a fee-for-service model:
    • A range of NATA certified assays for steroids, metanephrines, vitamins and drugs
    • Assay service for research groups

Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that develops and improves on methods for storing, retrieving, organising and analysing biological data. A major activity in bioinformatics is to develop software tools to comprehend complex biological systems.

Capabilities
  • Differential Gene Expression – Statistical analysis of differential gene expression from transcriptomics data (microarray, RNAseq)
  • Variant Identification – Identification of genetic variants (SNPs and InDels) from large scale genomics data
  • Methylation and ChIPseq – Exploration of epigenetics and post-transcriptional modifications of the genome and its expression
  • De-novo assembly – In silico assembly of transcriptomics or genomics data from non-model organisms

The platform also provides access to the IPA (Ingenuity Pathway Analysis) and Metacore (GeneGo) software via a hot desk for its collaborators.

Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine

The Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine Platform hosts a biological Isolator that provides a fully contained environment suitable for the processing of human cells and tissue. This facility has been established to boost the clinical development of human cell-based therapies and regenerative medicine applications.

The Platform provides a flexible, cost-effective alternative to traditional cell therapy manufacturing and regenerative medicine facilities. It is available to researchers and commercial entities from within and outside the MHTP seeking to progress cell and tissue based therapies to the clinic. The platform houses the BioSpherix Xvivo ISO5 Isolator, an enclosed, integrated and fully controlled environment for cell and tissue processing. The Miltenyi MACSQuant Tyto clinical cell sorter and the GeSim BioScaffolder with 3D biological printing and melt electrospinning are additional capabilities within the facility.

Clinical Trials Centre

Clinical trials provide patients with the most innovative treatments and medications available and improve the management of a range of diseases and medical conditions.   

The Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP) has proudly facilitated more than 200 clinical trials within the state-of-the-art MHTP Clinical Trials Centre to date. In an Australian first, our unique and distinctive facility supports research conducted at Monash University and the Hudson Institute in collaboration with Monash Health, the largest public health service in Victoria. 

Multiple Monash Health departments access the Clinical Trials Centre including Haematology, Oncology, Gastroenterology, Lung and Sleep, Diabetes, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Stroke, Nephrology, Critical Care and ENT.  Our trials are helping patients with a range of diseases and conditions, including Lymphoma, Advanced Solid Tumours, Hepatitis, Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma.

Since opening in December 2015, our dedicated and self-contained clinical research and trials facility has revolutionised how trials are conducted within Monash Health.  Our co-location with researchers, on level 3 of the purpose-built Translational Research Facility, at the precinct, enhances collaboration and links between basic and clinical research and patient care, expediting translation of vital discoveries to the bedside.

The MHTP Clinical Trials Centre, directly connected to Monash Medical Centre by a link bridge, contains 10 consulting rooms, 8 clinical beds and 21 treatment chairs dedicated to clinical trials patients and can be accessed 24/7 should a trial require. Dedicated research nurses provide timely and accurate protocol-required data in a professional, warm and inviting environment. 

Supported by an on-site DXA machine, a dedicated trials pharmacy and pathology service, the MHTP Clinical Trials Centre offers a one-stop-shop for conducting clinical trials.

Working together with Monash Health’s Research Support Services, Monash Health, Monash University and Hudson Institute researchers and coordinators, the Centre supports trials from Phase 1 through to Phase 4. 

The MHTP Clinical Trials Centre continues to increase access to a countless number of trials for the fast growing population of Melbourne’s South East, and encourages national and international research collaborations.

Flow Cytometry

Flow Cytometry
The Flow Cytometry Facility uses sophisticated instruments for cellular and particle analysis based upon the use of fluorescent probes and markers. Flow cytometers can be used for investigating cellular makeup, enabling detailed analysis of biological activity and function and for isolating rare cell populations for further studies.  The facility currently operates one high speed sorter and two cell analysers and provides the following services on a fee-for-service model:
  • Cell sorting
  • Cell analysis
  • Training for independent use of cell analysers
  • Advice on experimental design and data analysis

Histology

The Hudson Institute's Histology Facility was established in 1999 to support the needs of researchers and students at the Institute. The Facility also provides services for the Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP) and external clients. Our aim is to provide high quality, reliable and cost effective histological serviceHistology involves the study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues. Tissues are carefully processed, sectioned and stained revealing delicate morphological features that can indicate health or disease for research, education or clinical studies.  The Histology Platform has two service models:

  • a full “Professional” end-to-end service provided by specialist staff
  • a "Do it Yourself" service providing access to laboratory facilities, specialist equipment and consumables.

In addition, the experienced Histology team can provide advice, training and research assistance in:

  • Dissection
  • Cassetting
  • Processing – to resin or paraffin
  • Cutting – fresh, resin or paraffin sections
  • Staining and coverslipping -automated or manual
  • Immunohistochemistry – automated utilising the Dako Autostainer
  • Micro Tissue array slide supply – creation of micro tissue arrays to suit your needs. We can create the multi block for you and provide sections for use as control tissue
  • Slide scanning
  • Digital photography, basic fluorescence and polarization

Medical Genomics

Medical Genomics

The MHTP Medical Genomics Facility is located level H04 of the Translational Research Facility. The Medical Genomics Facility provides a comprehensive range of technologies to analyse DNA and RNA, determining its structure and function and its role in health and diseases.

The facility services the Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP) partners, Hudson Institute, Monash University and Monash Health, as well as research institutes throughout Australia. The facility maintains an excellent reputation for the provision of the highest quality data and comprehensive customer support. 

Operating as not-for-profit organisation, the facility includes core centres providing research expertise, services and reagents. The Next Generation service is NATA accredited and complies with ISO 15189:2007 and ISO 9001:2015.

We provide a broad range of specialist genomic services based upon a fee-for-service model including
